ONE YEAR CONTRACT - FULL TIME MEDIA RELATIONS/RESEARCH OFFICER

Position Title: Media Relations/Research and Planning
Salary Range: To be determined based on experience and qualifications
Supervisor: Chief of Police

POSITION SUMMARY:

The individual assigned to this position will be responsible to act as the liaison between the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and the media, prepare both internal and external communications, business plans and facilitate various public function

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in a policing environment having worked in a variety
    of areas of a Service.
  • Preference will be given to applicant(s) who have demonstrated experience in either field of Media Relations or business process. The prior experience may be formal education/training or a combination of either with relevant work experience.
  • Ability to use CPIC, RMS NICHE and OSL
  • Knowledge and skills associated with Social Media Platforms.
  • Well-developed keyboarding and data skills
  • Demonstrated organizational skills
  • Demonstrated written communication skill
  • Demonstrated oral communication skills.  Such as the ability to perform professionally while being interviewed by the media or speaking publicly on behalf of the Service.
  • Demonstrated analytical and research skills
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to respond effectively and professionally in stressful situations

 

FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Liaison with members across the Service including the Chief of Police and/or Deputy Chief of Police.
  • Act as the Media Liaison for the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.
  • Review daily occurrences and release appropriate newsworthy information to the media.
  • Prepare and issue media releases on major cases in consultation with the Major Case Manager or Incident Commander.
  • Work with community organizations and groups for the planning of and attendance at special events and presentations, representing the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.
  • Develop and maintain internal and external contacts to facilitate communication between the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and community groups, individuals, agencies and media outlets.
  • Organize and attend various police related functions such as Police Week, Police Community Program Night, and the Crime Prevention Seminar.
  • Prepare internal and external communications materials including engaging the public via social media. (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram)
  • Review social media (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) for items of interest to the SSMPS.
  • Assist the Chief of Police by coordinating police oriented community events.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining the SSMPS Business Plan.
  • The ability to work independently under minimal supervision.
  • Effective time management skills and the ability to work flexible hours.
  • Ability to develop good inter-personal relationships.
  • Proficient use of technology including Microsoft Office software, CPIC, RMS(Niche), Power Point and various social media platforms.
  • Review, maintain and prepare SSMPS policies and procedures.
  • Prepare and distribute Senior Officer Notifications on significant events.
  • Update and manage Senior Command calendar events.
  • Ability to travel and complete any necessary training.
