When The Traffic Lights Go Out

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like to remind motorists of the rules of the road when approaching intersections where the traffic lights are malfunctioning.

  • Drivers facing traffic signals that aren’t illuminated are required by law to treat the intersection as a four-way stop.
  • Drivers facing a traffic control signal showing a circular flashing green indication may proceed forward, unless otherwise directed.
  • Drivers facing a traffic control signal showing a flashing circular amber indication may proceed with caution.
  • Drivers facing a traffic control signal showing a flashing circular red indication shall stop the vehicle and yield right of way to approaching traffic. Drivers may proceed when it is safe to do so.
  • In addition motorists need to be alert and aware of pedestrian traffic, cyclists, and other road users who may be confused by malfunctioning lights and signals.
  • By remembering the rules of the road and implementing them properly, you could avoid being involved in a motor vehicle collision and possibly being seriously injured.
