TITLE: Manager, Corporate Communications, Planning & Research

SALARY RANGE: Job Class VI - $64,957.004 - $76,615.217 (2017 Rates)

SUPERVISOR: Chief of Police

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible to act as the liaison between the Sault Ste. Police Service and the media, prepare both internal and external communications, policy review, design, implementation, evaluation, strategic plans and facilitate various public functions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in a policing environment having worked in a
    variety of areas of a Service.
  • Preference will be given to applicant(s) who have demonstrated experience in Media Relations, Journalism or business process. The prior experience may be formal education/training or a combination of either with relevant work experience.
    • Knowledge and skills associated with Social Media Platforms.
    • Effective written and oral communicator
    • The ability to perform professionally while being interviewed by the media or speaking
      publicly on behalf of the service
    • Knowledge of public procurement practices including the issuance and evaluations of
      RFPs, RFQs
    • Demonstrated analytical and research skills
    • Experience leading or participating on a cross-functional team
    • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision
    • Effective time management skills and the ability to work flexible hours
    • Ability to develop good inter-personal relationships
    • Proficient use of Microsoft Office software, CPIC, RMS NICHE, OSL and various social
      media platforms
    • Data entry and analysis skills
    • Superior organizational skills
    • Valid Ontario Driver’s License with full driving privileges and ability to travel in order to
      complete any necessary training.

FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Act as Special Advisor to the Chief of Police and/or designate on matters of public relations, communication and planning
  • Act as the Spokesperson for the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service
  • Maintain executive level of confidentiality pertaining to all aspects of the SSM Police Service.
  • Ensuring appropriate retention and disposal of confidential documents/files in accordance with Freedom of Information legislation and the Service’s retention by-law.
  • Executive lead on managing the revision, publishing and retention of Service policies and procedures
  • Review daily occurrences and release appropriate newsworthy information to the media and public.
  • Executive lead on all media releases relating to major cases in consultation with the Major Case Manager or Incident Commander.
  • Executive lead with Stakeholder Management - working with various community organizations and groups for the planning and execution of special events and presentations, representing the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.
  • Develop and maintain internal and external contacts to facilitate communication between the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and community partners, groups, individuals, agencies and media outlets.
  • Executive lead on organizing, hosting and executing various police related functions such as Police Week, Police Community Program Night, and the Crime Prevention Seminar.
  • Executive lead on managing internal and external communications, including preparation of social media posts to engage, educate or inform the public of Services initiatives, responding to and moderating comments as required.
  • Executive lead on monitoring social media (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) for items of interest to the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.
  • Executive lead on development of new Service website.
  • Executive lead on all public-facing content available on Service website, respond to requests and inquiries accepted through the website as required.
  • Photograph, record and edit material for distribution on Service Social Media platforms.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of the Service’s Strategic Business Plan and Annual Report.
  • Executive lead on preparing, distributing and evaluations of tenders, Requests for Proposal, Request for Quotes, etc.
  • Executive lead on preparing and distributing Senior Officer Notifications on significant events
  • Review Senior Command calendar and make recommendations regarding public-facing events and participation.
  • Executive lead to promote Service initiatives to increase public safety, educate the community and improve public perception.
  • Ensure quality and consistency in Service messaging and branding.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
